(NEWPORT, KY) -- The driver of a semi truck who caused a fatal crash last July will avoid jail time.

Campbell County Judge Julie Reinhardt Ward sentenced Gregory Gibson to five years probation and one year of home incarceration. Gibson will also have to wear a monitoring device for eight months and serve 100 hours of community service.

Investigators say Gibson was behind the wheel of a tractor trailer when he ran a stop sign on the AA Highway in Campbell County and t-boned a pick up truck.

Heather Evans, 14, was a passenger in that pick up truck. She later died from injuries sustained in the crash. Five others were injured.

Gibson was charged with one count of reckless homicide and four counts of assault.

Judge Ward handed down the sentence based on recommendations from Evans' family members. Evans' mother, grandmother and aunt all gave emotional testimony in court. Her mother says Heather would have been 15 years old this Saturday.
