(ALEXANDRIA, KY) -- Campbell County police say they have made an arrest in a 19-year-old murder case.
David Smith, 48, has been charged with complicity to murder and tampering with evidence stemming from the March 1989 murder and disappearance of Steven Hafer, who was 32-years-old at the time.
Police say Smith and a deceased co-conspirator killed Hafer in his Grant's Lick home. Smith was Hafer's brother-in-law, and Hafer's body has never been recovered.
Campbell County Lt. David Fickenscher says police identified a new witness in the case and were able to determine where Hafer died through forensic evidence that wasn't available when the murder took place.
Lt. Fickenscher believes Smith and co-conspirator were in Hafer's home waiting for him, then killed him.
Police had met with prosecutors in 1995, but determined they did not have enough evidence to file any charges in the murder.
Lt. Fickenscher says Hafer's wife was a witness in the case, but had nothing to do with her husband's death. He says she played a small role in covering it up, but will not face charges because the statue of limitations has expired.
