Remember: pets and fireworks don't mix

CINCINNATI (FOX19) -- The local SPCA is reminding pet owners that fireworks this weekend may bother the animals.

Big firework spectaculars are usually not a problem, unless you live very close to the venue. The SPCA says it's the small local fireworks that upset pets.

A dog's hearing is much more sensitive than ours, and in some cases loud noises cause actual pain to the animals' ears and cause them to run.

"Some of these animals have this fear so badly that they need to be seen by a veterinarian and they have to be sedated for the Fourth of July," said Andy Mahlman with the SPCA.

Not every case is that severe, but if you have animals, the best course of action is to stay at home with them, keep them in a quiet calm place, and maybe even turn on some music.
