Lauterbach's mother speaks on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON, D.C. (CNN) -- Sexual assault in the military is the topic of a congressional hearing Thursday on Capitol Hill.

The hearing is focused on making sure there are adequate policies to prevent, treat and punish sexual assaults.

One of the witnesses was Mary Lauterbach, the mother of Marine Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach, who was killed in December.

Prior to her death, Maria Lauterbach had made rape allegations and had taken out protective orders against fellow Marine Cesar Laurean. He is now charged with her murder.

The Government Accountability Office will present preliminary data that suggest soldiers are afraid to report sexual assault because they fear harassment and ridicule.
