Representative Catherine Barrett is a legislator for the 31st District of Ohio. As she continues her second term in office, Representative Barrett will continue to push for bills that will ensure the education and health of children, insurance for the underprivileged, access to affordable housing, and a quality of economic stability for all Ohioans.
As a legislator, Representative Barrett currently serves on Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, Education Committee, Finance and Appropriations Committee, Agriculture and Development Subcommittee; Retirement and Aging Committee; and Quality Education for Ohio’s Schoolchildren Special Committee. She has also previously served on the Local Government and Township Committee and the Technology and Elections Committee. She is also the Vice President of the Ohio House Women’s Democratic Caucus and previously served as the Treasurer.
Representative Barrett has a long history of public service. She has served as the Mayor of Forest Park in Cincinnati for two terms and sat on City Council for four terms. She is also very active in civic organizations such as: Women in Government; National Foundation of Women Legislators; Women Legislator’s Lobby; Children’s Environmental Health Center; Ohio Legislative Black Caucus; Forest Park Women’s Club; Forest Park Business Association; Advisory Board of Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce; League of Women Voters; Delta Sigma Theta African American Economic Empowerment Organization; Cincinnati Woman’s Political Caucus; Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana Regional Council of Governments; and the Negro Women Council.
Representative Barrett received her B.A. in Business Administration from The Union Institute in Cincinnati and her master curriculum at Antioch University focused upon financial planning. She has also graduated as a fellow from Harvard JFK Senior Executives in State and Local Government; Center for Policy Alternatives Flemming Fellows Institute and the Council of State Governments Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development. Recently, she has been awarded a fellowship with the Eleanor Roosevelt Global Leadership Institute.
Outside of the legislative house, Representative Barrett is a financial consultant for various small businesses, a business owner and a financial analyst at General Electric Company. As a consultant and advisor to small businesses, she helps to develop and implement their financial systems and procedures, including budgets; cash forecasting; cash flow analysis; cost analysis; accounts receivable; accounts payable; and payroll. She helps companies to identify and minimize risk exposure while maximizing efficiency.
She has received the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks “Ohio Hunger Heroine Award”, the E-Com-Ohio’s Legislative Wired Award 2001 and has also garnered recognition in Who’s Who of Society, Who’s Who of U.S. Executives, and Who’s Who Worldwide.
During the close of session for the summer and in the midst of trying to resuscitate the state budget, I announced the partnership between the National Foundation of Women Legislators and the Drug Enforcement Administration to combat the national problem of drugs. As we announced this new initiative, I am pleased to say that the campaign was revealed simultaneously in all 50 states with the hope that it will have a lasting impact on the war on drugs.
