EAST END, OH (FOX19) - A three alarm fire has destroyed an apartment building, forcing multiple families from their homes.

Firefighters were called out just before 3 a.m. Tuesday morning to the complex in the 2500 block of Riverside Drive. The found smoke and heavy flames coming from the rear of the second floor.

The initial fire units focused their efforts on any occupants that may have been trapped. The incident commander requested a second and third alarm simultaneously due to the large volume of fire showing, and the probability of occupants being trapped due to the time of day, this brought to the scene 40 additional fire fighters.

Firefighters had to take a defensive approach, meaning they stayed outside of the burning building and sprayed water on it.

Luckily, all occupants made it out all right. Due to the large volume of water used to suppress this fire, structural stability is a concern. Fire personnel will be kept out of the building until it is deemed safe to enter.

The structure is a four-story brick and joist type construction that was probably built in the late 1800's or early 1900's. Buildings of this type are known for heavy lumber in its structural support system.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Damage is estimated at $250,000. There was no damage to surrounding properties.
