2 children injured in Hamilton fire

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) -

UPDATE: Hostpital officials say Maggie Batista has been released from the hospital while Jesus Torres remains in serious condition.

PREVIOUSLY:

A house fire in Hamilton has severely injured two children.

Flames broke out before 1 p.m. in the 1000 block of Maple Ave.

Two children were air lifted to Children's Hospital, and then taken to Shriner's Hospital. They have been identified as Jesus Torres, 20 months, and Maggie Batista, 3. The children are half brother and sister.

According to Shriner's, Jesus is listed in serious condition and Maggie is in fair condition.

Investigators say the fire started in the basement of their home when the children got a hold of a gas can, poured out the gas, and then the fumes were ignited by a pilot lighter on the water heater.

Police say their parents will not be charged.
