UPDATE: Police have identified the suspect as Larry Hughes, 52, of Welsh Drive in Covington.
An autopsy has been requested through the state coroner's office.
Five Covington officers have been placed on routine administrative leave following this incident.
Police are investigating the death of a man after he was taken into custody Wednesday morning.
A short time after 11 a.m., Covington police officers responded to the intersection of Highland Avenue and Jefferson Street for a report of a man with a gun in the area.
When they arrived to the scene they found an individual that matched the description of the suspect. There was struggle when officers tried to subdue him. The individual was tased twice and eventually taken into custody.
While police were recovering the handgun, the suspect went into medical distress. He was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital, where he died.
Covington Police is continuing to investigate the incident.
