HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY - The eastbound Combs Hehl Bridge that carries traffic on I-275 from Kentucky to Ohio will be under nighttime closure for repairs beginning Friday, Dec. 12.
Crews will be moving equipment onto the bridge on Wednesday, Dec. 10, to prepare for repair work.
Contractors for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet are replacing two cracked splice plates and two adjacent plates on the eastbound span as part of an extensive inspection, metal testing and repair project.
Splice plates are connecting pieces that join other steel parts. Each splice plate weighs about 400 pounds and requires 123 bolts. This extensive repair requires 4-man lifts, a crane and a 24-person crew working in extreme and confining conditions. Total closure of the roadway is required while this work is performed.
The work will begin at approximately 8 p.m. on Friday. The eastbound bridge will be closed to all traffic from 9 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, and from 9 p.m. Saturday until 9 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 14. Detours will be in place. Motorists are strongly encouraged to use alternate routes.
The weight limit on the eastbound span has been reduced to three tons. Once repairs are completed to the cabinet's satisfaction, the weight restriction will be lifted.
