COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - It could have been a terrible tragedy - a school bus taking kids home at the end of the day ends up in the side of a house.

The accident occurred at Lincoln and Decoursey Avenues in Covington, Ky. a short time after 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Police believe the bus driver tried to avoid hitting a car and lost control, running into some trees before slamming into a home at the intersection.

There were 14 children on the bus and the driver. The children on the bus were from Latonia Elementary School, which is just a few blocks from the accident scene.

Officials say one girl on the bus was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital as a precaution. Five more children were brought in by parents. All of the injuries appear to be minor.

Angel Brabard, 11, was on the bus and says as soon as the bus hit the house everyone panicked.

"I was scared," she said. "I just grabbed my stuff and I ran. Everybody was forcing themselves out the back. Our bus driver had already opened the side door and I went out the side."

Nick Fraiser, who was outside working on his car and saw the crash happen, said his first reaction was to get help for the children.

"Hopefully no one is dead that is what I was thinking," said Fraiser. "My first reaction was to just call 911, try to get help, and I ran over and started to grab kids off the bus. Everybody was frantic and crying. I was just tying to help."

School officials called parents, who arrived shaken and shocked at what was in front of them.

"I didn't know what to think when I got here I ran straight through the yellow tape like my son is on that bus and then I didn't see him, I just saw the bus," said parent Crystal Cunningham. "The bus through the house, I'm like, 'Oh my God.' It's just amazing they walked away from it like that."

Covington School District spokesman Bill Weathers said counselors will be available at school Friday for the children who were on the bus or witnessed the scene. An assistant principal is also riding the bus with the students involved to provide comfort for them.

The bus driver will undergo a drug test, which is standard procedure for any school bus driver involved in a crash.

The residents of the house are staying with neighbors until their home is repaired.

Covington Police are continuing to investigate the incident to see if any charges should be filed.
