NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) - Crews are battling a large fire in Newport.

Flames broke out just after 2 p.m. at the corner of 9th and Central.

Firefighters say the fire began in a home and then quickly spread to an adjacent home and business. When firefighters arrived, they helped rescue one occupant, but they say everyone did get out safely.

Initial reports are that the fire was being fueled by natural gas. Firefighters say they heard an explosion about three minutes after they arrived on the scene.

Crews spent well over a half hour fighting the flames before finally getting it under control. They then began to focus on hot spots.
