UC grad dies in Fla. plane crash

VOLUSIA COUNTY, FL (CNN) - Federal authorities are investigating a small plane crash in Florida that killed a Delta Connection Academy instructor and student pilot.

Student pilot Derek Fox, 30, and his instructor, Adi Atkinson, 23, were killed.

Fox is originally from Huron, Ohio, and received his business degree from the University of Cincinnati.

This is the first fatal training flight in the 20 year history of the Delta Connection Academy. The academy said its thoughts are with the families.

Nobody knows what happened in this case, only that a 911 caller thought the plane was in big trouble around 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, less than an hour after it took off.

But without a flight plan to know where the plane was supposed to be, no distress call, no beacon, no column of smoke, the deputy cleared the call. The FAA didn't get called until seven hours later, after the Academy said its plane was late.

A radar check finally indicated a possible crash sight around 2:30 in the morning. A Volusia County Sheriff's Office helicopter found the plane a little before 4 a.m. in the morning.
