HEBRON, OH (FOX19) - Traffic remains at a standstill on eastbound Interstate 275 near Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport several hours after a FedEx truck crashed off the Mineola Pike ramp.
Boone County deputy sheriffs found Leroy Alexander, 44, of Lebanon, Indiana, trapped in the truck hanging upside down when they arrived at the scene about 6 a.m. Thursday, according to Major Tom Scheben.
He remained trapped in the truck about an hour total but never lost consciousness. Once rescue workers extricated Alexander, he was airlifted to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Scheben said.
Both sides of the highway shut down when the medical helicopter landed just before 7 a.m. The eastbound lanes remained closed for more than an hour before at least one lane opened.
All lanes of I-275 were back open around noon.
A preliminary investigation indicated the truck driver was eastbound on I-275 when he veered right and struck a broken down, unoccupied 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer parked in the emergency lane. He continued across the bottom of the Mineola Pike entrance ramp and then over the embankment.
His trailers were hauling general merchandise, according to Scheben.
Cleanup was extensive because the fuel tanks needed to be siphoned before the massive vehicle can be uprighted and cleared away.
