CLINTON COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - A mother and her toddler were killed and two other people were hospitalized in a fiery, multi-vehicle crash in Clinton County Monday night, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Wendy Brewer, 20, of Wilmington and her 14-month-old daughter, Ariella Brewer, were pronounced dead at the scene of the 9:30 p.m. accident on Ohio 134 in Union Township, patrol officials said early Tuesday.
The 16-year-old driver of the Chevrolet Cavalier they were riding in was airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton in critical condition.
His condition was not immediately available.
The driver of another vehicle, 24 year old Zachary Russell of Wilmington, was taken to Clinton Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to the state patrol.
Troopers gave this account of the crash:
The 16-year-old driving the southbound Cavalier tried to pass a 2016 Dodge Caravan mini-va, but struck it from behind. The Cavalier went left of center and collided head-on with a northbound 2002 Buick Century driven by the 24-year-old.
Then, the Cavalier was hit by a northbound vehicle, a 2000 Ford Taurus driven by a 22-year-old Wilmington man.
At that point, the Cavalier burst into flames and was completely engulfed.
“And he clipped that vehicle, which sent him into a third vehicle and after that the car spun and was hit in the passenger door by a fourth vehicle, which set it off the roadway. A few minutes after that, the car caught on fire with the 20-year-old and the 14-month-old trapped inside," Trooper Jeremy Grillot said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Alcohol or drug use are unknown, troopers said.
