WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) - Thanks to home security cameras or doorbell cameras, people have the ability to share information, pictures, and videos in real time.
West Chester Police say having this technology at our fingertips could help them catch criminals.
If you have a security camera or a doorbell camera such as Ring, Nest, or Blink, you can register it with the West Chester Police Department.
That means, if your camera captures something suspicious, you can share that video or picture with officers.
By doing this, police say they will be able to get a better look at what happened and possibly a look at the suspect or suspects.
Here’s how it works: your name will go on a list, then police will contact you if they think anything recorded could help their investigation.
By registering, you are not giving police direct video access. If they contact you, it’s up to you on whether or not you want to share, they say.
“By signing up we are not getting access to your camera system. We are simply just looking for folks who have them in the event we do have a string of car break-ins or burglaries or so forth, that we can reach out and see if perhaps they caught some information on their cameras that they may have not known about,” said Public Information Officer Daniel Dean with West Chester Police Department.
If you want to register your camera, all you have to do is visit the West Chester Police Departments Website and click on ‘Register a Security Cam.’
West Chester Police say if you ever notice anything suspicious in your neighborhood to give them a call.
