CVS announces it is opening hundreds of Smile Direct Club locations inside its stores

CVS is partnering with Smile Direct Club

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - CVS just announced it is opening hundreds of Smile Direct Club locations inside its stores this year, with hundreds more coming online by 2021.

In those “Smile Shops” customers can get a 3D scan of their teeth, plus an at-home impression kit used to create custom aligners.

Aetna, which recently merged with CVS, will now cover those aligners for the ten million Aetna Dental subscribers. United Healthcare is also adding Smile Direct Club to its covered services. Under both plans subscribers will pay less than $1,000 out of pocket. Without insurance they cost about $2000.

Traditional braces cost two to four times as much, but orthodontists say that additional cost covers many exams and adjustments to ensure the best alignment. And orthodontists can treat complex cases, while Smile Direct Club’s website says its aligners work best on patients who only need mild to moderate correction.

Many orthodontists do offer low-cost payment plans. There are also a number of programs that offer free or reduced treatment (Smiles Change Lives, Dental Life Line) to patients who qualify.
