FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio (FOX19) - A mother desperate for answers is offering her own reward for information on her daughter’s death.
Police said Sydney Garcia-Tovar, 16, died after she was shot outside of a Fairfield Township apartment complex in July 2018. Police believe that Sydney was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was only a bystander. In the days since, her mother, Stephanie Garcia-Tovar, has been fighting for justice.
“If I have to keep making people angry, or whatever, posting about them, calling them out, I’m doing it. I’m not stopping,” said the mother.
Stephanie Garcia-Tovar said she is angry because people who were there the night her daughter died are not cooperating with police, and she said one witness who is speaking with investigators is not telling the truth.
“One of the witnesses had failed their lie detector test," she said. "It’s really crushing because you want to believe people.”
It is that frustration that prompted her to do something she said she has never done before. She posted photos of $1,000 in cash on social media. She is offering it as a reward to anyone who comes forward with the right information.
Though CrimeStoppers already had a reward on the table, Stephanie Garcia-Tovar is hoping that someone seeing the stacks of cash could make a difference.
“I need closure. Sydney needs peace, and even when they are arrested, it’s not going to bring her back, but it’ll keep them from doing that to somebody else," she said.
She is hoping to raise more money through donations to add to the reward. She believes it will soon be at $1,500. You can donate to the reward fund here. If you have any information on Sydney’s death, call Fairfield Township Police or anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040.
