VERSAILLES, Ind. (FOX19) - A Switzerland County woman was sentenced to 25 years in prison Monday after pleading guilty on a charge of neglect causing the death of her 2-year-old son.
Robyn Johnson, 40, of Vevay was sentenced by a Switzerland County jury after she pleaded guilty on the neglect charge after the death of her son in 2017, according to Indiana State Police.
Authorities say Colton was examined in June 2017 at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for short bowel syndrome — a condition typically caused by intestinal malfunction.
Doctors determined Colton was experiencing extreme dehydration and a possible blood infection that required further treatment and testing, police say. Johnson then signed an “against medical advice” form and took Colton home, despite repeated attempts by doctors to get Johnson to return her son to the hospital.
Colton was brought back to the hospital the next day where he died after doctors failed to revive him from cardiac arrest.
Johnson’s sentence comes after a more than year-long investigation by Indiana State Police.
She was also assessed fines and court costs.
