Wife charged in connection with husband’s death

Family: Fairfield shooting was an accident

FAIRFIELD, OH (FOX19) - A Fairfield woman is facing charges for the death of her husband, but the couple’s loved ones believe the situation was an accident.

Subha Katel is charged with negligent homicide in the shooting death of her husband, Tika Katel.

Krishna Acharya, a friend of the family, said the Katels are loving and caring. He said that what happened in their home on Saturday was never supposed to happen.

“This is just a case of an accident, and the family is going through a lot of problems and a lot of pain," said Acharya.

Fairfield Police said that 43-year-old Subha somehow shot her husband Tika inside their Sigmon Way home on Saturday afternoon. He later died at the hospital.

Acharya said that it was not malicious and it was not on purpose.

“There was a gun in the house, and it went off accidentally and hit the dad," said Acharya.

Relatives say they are now in mourning and are trying to process the loss. Tika, Acharya said, was a hard worker who came to the U.S. to provide for his family.

“This is a very kind family. We are Bhutanese refugees," said Acharya. "They came here in 2009, and they lived in New Hampshire for about six or seven years. They came to Cincinnati in 2016 and have been living here ever since then.”

Loved ones said that Subha, who was in court Tuesday and is now on house arrest, is struggling.

“What she’s going through is the worst of all right now," said Acharya. "I can’t imagine what’s going through her head right now, how she’s feeling, and I think what’s being shared is causing more pain.”

Acharya said they want to see the criminal charges dropped.

Fairfield Police have not released any more information or details regarding exactly what happened.

A funeral service for Tika Katel is scheduled for Tuesday.
