Covington Schools employee resigns amid shaken child investigation

Alleged 'shaken baby' at Covington Day Care

COVINGTON, Ky. (FOX19) - A Covington Independent Public Schools employee resigned amid an investigation into allegations that they shook a young child in August.

In a letter home to parents sent to FOX19 NOW, the district confirms they were made aware of an incident that happened Aug. 26 at the Chapman Child Care Center.

District officials say they’re legally not at liberty to discuss details of this matter, but assured parents immediate action was taken and the person involved is no longer with the district.

They say the person accused of shaking the young child was immediately reported to the Cabinet for Families and Children (CFC.)

“In addition, members of our district administrative team and I met with the parents of the child. We assured them that their concerns were heard and given consideration in the decision making process,” Superintendent Alvin L. Garrison said in the letter.

Covington Police Captain Brian Valenti says police were notified on Aug. 27 about an incident that occurred at the Chapman Child Care Center.

Valenti confirmed the child is a 8-month-old girl and there is an active investigation into this incident.

He said there was a delay in police being notified by the school district.

Valenti says, as stated in the letter sent home to parents, the district only reported the incident to CFC.

However, he says the report CFC received was only made clear after they received the coinciding report from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where the young child was taken.

Police were not notified directly by the school until the following day, which is the same day they received the report from CFC, he says.

Subsequently Valenti says the parents of the victim filed a report with police of the assault which allegedly was at the hands of an employee of the care facility.

Valenti says due to the fact that the victim is a juvenile, police will not be releasing the victim’s information or injuries she may have suffered unless charges are filed.
