MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (WAVE) - Four people are dead and one is missing after a boat capsized Monday in the White River.

Indiana officials said seven people were in the boat when it capsized just downstream from the IPL dam.

Authorities were alerted at 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Seven people were in what officials described as a Jon boat when the boat turned over.

“We got a call that a large family group had been picnicking and fishing in the area,” Indiana DNR spokeswoman Angela Goldman said. “They were kind of ferrying back and forth across the river. They had about seven people in a Jon boat. That Jon boat capsized, all those seven went into the water. We were able to rescue several of them.”

Others on the shore also got involved when they saw what was happening. Some of them went into the water to help.

It happened in an area that’s described as generally not very deep, but there are some deeper spots to watch out for.

When it was all over, four people were dead including a 73-year-old and a 6-year-old. They died at an area hospital after being pulled from the water unresponsive.

Emergency officials were back in the water Tuesday morning continuing their search for the last missing person.

None of the victims’ names has been released.
