UNION TWP., Ohio (FOX19) - A “significant fire” broke out at a store in Eastgate Mall early Friday, causing heavy damage, Union Township’s fire chief said.

Fire crews were called to the mall on Eastgate Boulevard off Interstate 275 shortly after 3 a.m.

Flames broke out in the Blackout Sports Center store near Dillard’s, triggering several sprinkler heads to go off and the fire alarm system, Chief Stan Deimling said.

Thirty firefighters responded from Union Township, Anderson Township, Miami Township and Milford.

The blaze was contained to Blackout Sports Center and knocked down, he said.

The cause remains under investigation.

“We are just overhauling and doing some salvage work and working on the origin of the cause of the fire,” he said. “I believe the mall will be open on time minus that store, obviously.”

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
