Collision causes police cruiser to crash into Newport convenience store
NEWPORT, Ky. (FOX19) - Three people including a Newport police officer were taken to a hospital overnight with minor injuries after a crash involving a cruiser, fire officials say.
The Newport Fire Department responded to the intersection of 11th Street and Central Avenue just before midnight, fire officials confirmed.
Newport police say the cruiser had a green light as it entered the intersection at Central Avenue and 11th Street.
A second vehicle disregarded the red light as it headed west on 11th Street, police said in a news release.
The officer was unable to avoid being hit by another vehicle.
The cruiser crashed into Marco’s Market, damaging the business, according to the fire department. No one was inside at the time.
A female and young child in the other vehicle went to the hospital, along with the officer, fire officials said.
Police say all three have been released.
The driver of the vehicle that went through the red light told police she was watching her child in her rearview mirror because she thought the child was choking and drove into the intersection.
