CINCINNATI (FOX19) - The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden has announced the name of its new baby bearcat.

A public contest through social media has determined the name of the bearcat — also known as a binturong — will be “Lucille.”

Lucille was welcomed to the zoo on Oct. 18, the zoo announced last month. At the time, she was already 1 month old.

People could write name ideas in posts on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #namethebearcat.

Since then, the zoo’s bearcat care team left it up to the public to vote on the two names they liked this week.

The people spoke, and the bearcat became Lucille.

The zoo says she will be the University of Cincinnati’s new animal mascot, appearing at football and basketball games beginning in December.

She will replace Lucy, the university’s beloved live mascot of 12 years, who retired in August.
