RIPLEY COUNTY, Ind. (FOX19) - An Indiana State trooper’s cruiser was struck by another vehicle Saturday as the trooper was conducting a traffic stop, according to ISP Sgt. Stephen Wheeles.

The incident occurred on I-74 near Batesville around 10:45 a.m.

Trooper Daniel Elmore’s 2013 Dodge Charger was parked behind the truck and trailer of a man he had pulled over when a 2012 Dodge Caravan driven by Juan Martinez, 44, of Chicago, left the eastbound lanes of the highway and hit the back of Elmore’s cruiser, Wheeles says.

Martinez’s minivan then overturned beside the roadway.

Elmore’s cruiser had its emergency lights on and he was out of it at the time of the crash.

The collision, Wheeles says, forced Elmore’s cruiser into the back of the trailer.

Three people in the minivan were taken to Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville for treatment of minor injuries.

A six-year-old child in the minivan was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Toxicology results are pending, though Wheeles says alcohol and drugs are not suspected factors in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
