New COVID-19 testing protocols for Kentucky long-term care facilities

Gov. Beshear gives update on COVID-19 in Kentucky

FRANKFORT, Ky. (FOX19) - Long-term care facilities in Kentucky have new COVID-19 testing protocols for staff and residents.

All staff and residents will be tested at least every 14 days, Kentucky officials announced on Wednesday.

Staff members who test positive for COVID-19 will undergo supplemental testing as will residents who have symptoms.

Representatives from the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services say they anticipate around 65,000 tests per month from the facilities.

The state will pay for the testing and COVID-19 tests will continue through the end of 2020.

454 long-term care facility residents currently have COVID-19, Gov. Andy Beshear said on Wednesday.

208 staff members at the facilities have COVID-19 as of Wednesday, he said.

2,992 total staff and residents have recovered from COVID-19, according to Beshear.

The overall number of recoveries statewide is 8,467, the governor said.

Beshear says Kentucky’s positivity rate is 5.51%, which is up from Tuesday’s 5.24%.

“I believe you are doing the right thing, the vast majority of people are wearing a face covering and it is making a difference,” Beshear said. “It looks like we are stopping a very dangerous situation from occurring and we need to keep it up.”

The positivity rate was not the only number related to COVID-19 to increase in the past day.

Twenty-one kids under the age of five were newly diagnosed with COVID-19, which is three more than the day before, the governor said.

“It’s just not going down,” Gov. Beshear said.

546 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Wednesday.

This brings the total number of cases to 32,741.

“Today’s number strongly suggests and I believe it’s evidence that face coverings are working,” the governor said. “Proving that even when other parts of the country may be escalating out of control, that we can still control our own destiny here in Kentucky with a small act that shows we care about each other.”

Kentucky only reported one new COVID-19 death on Wednesday.

A free drive-thru testing will begin Thursday in Erlanger at the former Toyota headquarters building in the Atlantic Corporate Center.

The address is 25 Atlantic Ave., Erlanger, Ky. 41018.
