CLERMONT COUNTY, Ohio (FOX19) - A 20-year-old man has died after rescue teams found him in East Fork Lake on Monday, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
ODNR confirmed the man’s death around 3:30 p.m. and identified him as Pedro Rodriguez.
Clermont County Dispatch said crews were on scene around 10:30 a.m. after Rodriguez was reported missing in the water.
ODNR Lt. Michael Sterwerf said rescue teams and civilians formed a human chain to find him.
Rodriguez was taken by Air Care to a local hospital, according to Clermont County Deputy Chief Chris Stratton, where Sterferf reported him as being in “grave condition.”
He has family from Cincinnati and Guatemala, according to ODNR.
Sterwerf said the 20-year-old was swimming with his brother and sister when he went under the water and could not be found for around 30 minutes.
“A local fisherman happened to be running side scan sonar, which is a device that fisherman use to find fish, and the fisherman came to help,” Sterwerf said.
UC Professor Catalin Macaries ayds she was part of the human chain that found Rodriguez in the shallow waters.
“I had my goggles on, so I was able to just go ahead and go in the bottom, see if I can find something, and at one point there was a girl who started to scream because she got scared,” he said. “I think she touched the body of the kid by mistake, and she just went away.”
A man who was acting as a translator on the scene said the victim was actually 16 years old, but ODNR confirmed Rodriguez’s age when they reported his death.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is handling the investigation, Stratton said.
