College student launching social media site to help locate missing people

BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - Dozens of people from all over the Tri-State are currently missing, prompting a local college student to start a new project that she hopes will help them.

Kira Pierson is currently studying forensic investigation at Miami University. She says she has interned with the Butler County Coroner’s Office and works in search and rescue.

Through those experiences, she has learned there are quite a few people currently missing in Butler County. That is why she has decided to create a social media site called Butler County Ohio Missing.

“I’d really love to give families answers, and even if it’s a not a good answer, anything is better than nothing," Pierson said.

From cases that date back to the 1980s to those that were reported recently, Pierson says she plans to post about all of the people who are missing from Butler County on her page.

Pierson says she wants to help others because she knows how tragedy can affect a family firsthand.

“My grandma, her mom was actually murdered by serial killer Donald Harvey, and I’ve seen the way that impacts her," Pierson said. "Just seeing how every year on birthdays or Christmas, she just gets really upset — and she has answers. I can’t imagine how awful that is if you don’t have answers.”

Pierson hopes her page will bring in new tips and leads that she will pass on to investigators and even perhaps lead to someone returning home.

“Being home, not being able to work during the pandemic, I’ve been on social media way too much, so I figured other people probably are too, so if you can just make something useful out of it, and I mean hopefully we can at least get one tip," Pierson said. “That would be more than amazing.”

For Pierson, this is only the beginning of her project. As her social media site spreads, she plans to expand it by including missing people from other counties. Eventually, she says she also wants to highlight cold cases, including Jane and John Does.

Pierson says any information she gets through her page will be turned over to the proper investigators.
