CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - As of Tuesday, the Department of Health said 5,547 Ohioans have died from the coronavirus with at least 261,482 cases reported statewide since the start of the pandemic.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine canceled his usual Tuesday afternoon briefing in preparation for a statewide address scheduled for Wednesday evening, but 19 News still provided a video update and spoke with MetroHealth Hospital’s Dr. David Margolius about the concerning trends.

“The community prevalence is really high,” Dr. Margolius said.

Doctor weighs in on outlook for Ohio as daily COVID-19 infections surge at record pace

It’s clear, Dr. Margolius suggested, that the surge is not stemming from businesses and restaurants, but rather from informal household settings and gatherings.

“At this point, I don’t think a shutdown would help stop the spread,” the doctor said.

Dr. Margolis said he is remaining optimistic because Ohioans have been in a similar position before when the infection rate was high mid-summer.

Wearing masks, maintaining distance, remaining strict with social circles, and limiting the number of outsiders invited into households would help slow the spread, Dr. Margolius added.

The 24-hour record increase of 6,508 reported cases is a cumulative of all positive test results as a lagging indicator the Ohio Department of Health received on Tuesday; not a total number of new infections reported in a single day.

Additionally, 23 new deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours.

An additional 14,222 total cases and 335 deaths are presumed to be linked to COVID-19 under the CDC expanded definitions and included in the Ohio Department of Health’s reporting.

Out of the 21,037 hospitalizations reported on Tuesday, at least 4,086 individuals were admitted to intensive care units.
