LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - A place dedicated to helping women was sprayed with a barrage of bullets on New Year’s Eve.

The Free2Hope home that’s sits on West Main Street to the brunt with more than 25 bullets in the building.

Amy Leenerts, Director and Founder of the organization said she’s heartbroken.

“We worked so hard on this house to fix it up and make it nicer,” Leenerts said. “It hurts a lot for sure.”

The women’s drop-in center provides services to domestic violence victims and victims of sex crimes including human trafficking. Leenerts found the bullet holes along with shell casings inside of the home on New Year’s Day.

“It’s a little bit disturbing,” Leenerts explained. “This has always been a place that’s supposed to be calm in nature, where women can come you know and be here in a quiet environment where it’s not so chaotic.”

Leenerts said she doesn’t know if her building was targeted for a reason, but said shootings in the Portland neighborhood are common.

“It’s really sad that things like this happen, that parents have to bring their children to the floor to keep them safe when they heart gunfire,” Leenerts added. “It’s real sad that people have to live like that.

Leenerts also added, she filed a police report and is waiting to hear from LMPD.
