EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Vincent Belmonte, 18, of Cleveland, was shot and killed by East Cleveland police officers after a chase with a stolen car Tuesday morning.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner identified Belmonte as the person who was killed.
According to East Cleveland police, the incident began around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday when officers started to go after a stolen vehicle.
Belmonte, another man and a woman were inside the car, police said.
During the chase, officers said Belmonte, the driver, struck several fixed objects and the vehicle began to catch fire.
The three occupants then bailed from the car on Allandale Road, officials said.
Th two passengers ran toward Euclid Avenue, while Belmonte fled behind houses and over a fence to the Apex Academy, according to police.
According to police, Belmonte was armed with a gun and officers fired an unknown amount of shots toward him.
Belmonte was struck an unknown amount of times.
EMS transported him to University Hospitals, where he was pronounced dead.
Ohio Attorney General’s Officer Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation will be taking the lead of this investigation.
