1 airlifted to hospital after Middletown house explosion

Home explosion puts man in hospital in serious condition

BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio (FOX19) - A house exploded in Middletown sometime Monday afternoon, according to Middletown police.

The explosion occurred in the 2500 block of Flemming Road, police say.

A City of Middletown spokesperson says one person was taken by Careflight to Miami Valley Hospital with serious injuries.

Middletown police first reported the explosion by tweet at 4:12 p.m. The city spokesperson said the fire was under control as of 5 p.m.

Amber Russell lives across the street. She says she was standing in her driveway when the explosion happened.

“I heard a bang and saw all the windows break and the door fly off,” she recalled.

“It was some type of explosion,” said Middletown Fire Chief Paul Lolli. “Possible gas explosion. WE’ll know more tomorrow.”

Lolli adds the concern is the stability of the house, though inspectors determined the house would not collapse.

“I was very surprised somebody could walk out after that,” Russell said, “because it didn’t look like anything someone could walk away from.”

An investigation is ongoing.

Authorities are advising people to stay out of the area and find alternative routes.
