MASON, Ohio (FOX19) - Classmates of a third-grade student, who died unexpectedly over the weekend, remembered and honored the 9-year-old boy with notes and drawings on Monday.

JJ Day, 9, died early Saturday, according to his family. JJ’s father says his son went to sleep Friday night, but never woke up Saturday.

Just days after his unexpected death, students at Mason Elementary School spent the day writing notes and coloring pictures to remember their classmate.

JJ’s favorite color was blue, so students and teachers wore the color on Monday in his honor. His classmates colored pictures and wrote notes about what they will remember and miss about the 9-year-old.

School officials say they will have additional counselors at the elementary, intermediate, and middle schools.

Described as a kind and friendly young boy, JJ’s family said he would go to great lengths to make people smile.

“The kind of boy that he was, the way that he made you laugh and made you smile, the hugs he gave, the love he gave, we felt he was meant to do really great things,” JJ’s mother, Kristen Day, said.

A GoFundMe also has been set up to raise money for the family.
