MASON, Ohio (FOX19) - A 9-year-old Mason boy appears to have likely died from some sort of undetected medical condition, according to the Warren County Coroner’s Office.

The official cause of death of JJ Day won’t be known for several weeks, pending tests including microscopic tissue samples, said Doyle Burke, the coroner’s chief investigator.

“It appears to be something natural. We are just not sure yet,” Burke said Tuesday morning. “We won’t know until we do a few more tests.”

Foul play is not suspected, and it does not appear to be COVID-19 related, he added.

“It’s just hard to say. There’s nothing glaring,” he said.

JJ was found dead over the weekend. His father says JJ went to sleep Friday night but never woke up on Saturday.

Officials with Mason schools asked students and faculty to wear blue on Monday in honor of the third-grader at Mason Elementary School.

Counselors and Cincinnati Children’s clinical therapists were on hand at Mason Elementary, Mason Intermediate, and Mason Middle schools.

“Our hearts are with the Day family during this very difficult time. We also lift up all of JJ’s classmates, teachers, and support staff. Please continue to keep JJ’s family, friends, neighbors, and all who loved him in your hearts and prayers,” the school district said.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help his family.
