BUTLER CO., Ohio (FOX19) - Detectives are investigating after a 12-year-old girl said a man tried to grab her in the parking lot of a gas station.
It started as a trip to the gas station for some snacks, but it took a terrifying turn for the girl as she left.
The 12-year-old noticed a man staring at her while she was inside the gas station, according to the Butler County sheriff’s report.
Once she paid for her snacks, she started for home by going towards a dirt path through a lightly wooded area.
She told deputies the man came after her in the parking lot of the gas station along Millvale Oxford Road.
The girl’s father, Kirk Colyer, said his daughter’s quick realization of what was happening allowed her to take off running.
“He tried to grab her, he lunged for her,” Colyer said. “She had the presence of mind to ‘oh god somebody is after me,’ and took off running. It’s kind of downhill slope, and she said the slope was helping her run faster, and he just kind of gave up.”
Colyer said they called the police, and he gathered neighbors to search near the path and the surrounding area as deputies responded.
The 12-year-old girl is a little frightened after what happened, her father said.
“She’s shaken up, she’s a little paranoid along with the rest of our kids because they couldn’t help overhearing what happened,” Colyer said. “Now, anybody, that pulls up in front of our house it’s ‘oh my god it’s a kidnapper.’ So, we’re just trying to kind of weather that.”
The police report described a man with a beard, sunglasses, a brown baseball hat, and a Carhartt jacket.
Detectives are investigating and working to gather more information right now.
