According to police, the passenger said the driver began experiencing a “medical emergency” and inadvertently stepped on the gas pedal, causing the Ford Fusion to pick up speed before leaving the road.

The passenger was taken to University Health Portage Medical Center and police said she is currently awake and able to communicate.

The identities of both persons have not been released yet, pending notification of next of kin.
