GREEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WXIX) - One person is dead after a vehicle crashed into a Green Township apartment building early Monday, a township spokesman tells FOX19 NOW.

The crash was reported at the Green Valley Apartments on Harrison Avenue, near Interstate 74, shortly after 9:30 a.m., Hamilton County dispatch says.

According to Green Township Police Chief James Vetter, the driver was unable to maintain control of the vehicle as it went around a curve before crossing over the exit ramp from westbound I-74 to Harrison Avenue.

The vehicle hit a curb, which caused it to become airborne and go over the guardrail, and into the apartments, the chief explained.

Rebecca, who witnessed the crash, said all she could do was dive out of the way of the incoming vehicle.

“When I seen him airborne, I just dove into the corner of the patio and ducked for cover,” she told FOX19 NOW.

Once the vehicle hit the building, Rebecca said it sounded like “a bomb went off.”

Chief Vetter says speed is a likely factor in the crash. He could not say at this time if drugs/alcohol played a factor.

The driver killed early Monday has not been identified.

Green Township Public Information Officer Michael Nie says he is not sure how many people were home at the time of the crash.

“It caused significant damage to the building,” explained Nie. “Unfortunately, it took out the stairwell in the middle of the building therefore, people couldn’t get out of the building so we did perform numerous rescues. Both people and pets.

Several families have been displaced from their homes, Chief Vetter said.

Call the Green Township Police Department at 513-574-0007 if you have information regarding the crash.
