Coroner: 2 of 4 children critically hurt in West Chester fire have died
WEST CHESTER, Ohio (WXIX) - Two of the four children critically hurt in a West Chester fire last weekend have died, according to the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office.
Alaiya Encarnacion, 2, and Bryson Brooks, 4, both died Tuesday at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the coroner’s office confirms.
There was no adult in the apartment when flames broke out inside the apartment bedroom Saturday on Aster Park Drive, township officials have said.
The surviving children, 6 years and 9 months, are being treated at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, township officials have said.
The 9-month-old remains in critical condition and is scheduled to undergo a neurological exam at some point, West Chester Fire Chief Rick Prinz explained.
As for the 6-year-old, he could soon be released from the hospital, the chief added.
Firefighters rescued the children, but they suffered severe smoke inhalation. The kids were in a different room from where the fire started, according to the chief.
“Paramedics and firefighters did everything they could do to give these children a fighting chance,” Chief Prinz said Wednesday.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Chief Prinz did say, “based on the evidence we have on the scene, we have no reason to believe this was caused by an outside source.”
