ELSMERE, Ky. (WXIX) - A dock worker died Wednesday after being hit by a semi at an Elsmere logistics company.

David Poe, 58, of Independence, Kentucky, was working at GXO Logistics when the semi hit him around 3 p.m., according to Kenton County Police.

The semi was backing up to a parked trailer at a loading dock when it hit Poe, police explained.

The 58-year-old GXO Logistics employee died at the scene.

Poe’s family spoke to FOX19 the day after his death.

“It’s been horrific,” said Alice Lewis, Poe’s cousin. “It’s just been a big traumatic experience for all of us. [...]You just never expect to bury your children.”

Lewis says the entire family is grieving. The hardest part, she says, is the suddenness of his death.

“It just blind sided us. We had no idea that this would happen,” she said. “He had a lot of people that loved him.”

The driver of the semi, 44-year-old Furqan Majeed, of West Chester, Ohio, stayed on scene until officers arrived, Kenton County Police said.

“We also feel sorry for the driver, you know?” Lewis said. “Because he has to live with this for the rest of his life. So you know, our prayers are with him too.”

A GXO spokesperson offered the following statement: “We’re saddened to confirm that a tragic accident at our facility in Florence, Kentucky resulted in the death of one of our associates. We have launched an investigation and are fully cooperating with OSHA and local law enforcement in their investigations. Our deepest sympathies are with the family and our Florence team.”

The Kenton County Police Department Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Unit is investigating to determine the cause of the crash.
