NKY man had long-term sexual relationship with 14-year-old girl, prosecutor says
Court documents show the man and teen believed they were in love.
KENTON COUNTY, Ky.(WXIX) - A Florence man faces charges after he allegedly met a teenage girl for sex after contacting her on social media.
A Kenton County grand jury on Thursday indicted 22-year-old Trevon Watts on charges of rape, sexual abuse and sodomy.
“So many things can go wrong when children use social media,” said Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders.
Sanders says the victim, a 14-year-old girl, thought she was in a romantic relationship with Watts. Court documents show Watts told detectives he was in love with her.
“Obviously, given the age discrepancy between the two, that’s not a real relationship, that’s a predator manipulating a child,” Sanders said.
Florence PD began investigating Watts in May 2021 when they received a tip that the girl was being sexually abused.
Watts allegedly had sex with her in several locations in Florence, Erlanger and Elsmere. Once, according to court documents, it happened at East Covered Bridge Park
The 22-year-old allegedly told investigators he met the teen three years prior when she was 11 and he was 20. The pair dated for a year before the investigation began but broke up when police started looking into it.
Watts said in his police interview he was still messaging the teen through Instagram, court documents show.
“Anytime we have a suspect who has perpetrated a child and engaged in manipulative behaviors like this, we always have concerns there could be other victims,” Sanders said.
The commonwealth’s attorney warns parents to check out their children’s social media even though doing so can feel like they’re spying.
“Do the right thing,” Sanders said. Be nosey. Look at your child’s phone. Look at their iPad. Know who your child is talking to, and if there are people on there you don’t recognize, then have a very frank discussion with your child.
Watts is currently being held at the Kenton County Jail on $5,000 bail. He will be back in court on Jan. 30.
If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison and must register as a sex offender.
