ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WXIX) - A 13-year-old Butler County boy told sheriff’s officials he was “playing” with a gun he didn’t know was loaded when it accidentally went off, shooting him in the face, a sheriff’s report shows.

It happened at a home in the 2400 block of Jackson Road in St. Clair Township shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday.

St. Clair Township EMS transported the teen to Atrium Medical Center, where he was airlifted to a Dayton hospital Wednesday night.

A man called 911 and reported his grandson accidentally shot himself.

The man told the dispatcher he was holding a pillow to the boy’s face to try to stop the blood.

First responders found the teen alert and conscious, according to the sheriff’s office which says he is expected to recover.

Deputies said the 13-year-old was “on the floor in the living room with blood on his face and holding a towel to his head. Upon speaking to the juvenile, he stated that the gun he used was in his bedroom on the bed. He stated he removed the guns from an upstairs bedroom and was playing with it. He states he did not know the gun was loaded,” the sheriff’s incident report states.

“The victim had black powder residue on his neck where the bullet entered. The bullet went upward and was stuck inside the middle forehead area. When checking the bedroom, the .38 mm S&W revolver was located on the bed where the incident took place.”

The S&W had a spent .38 round in the chamber and a loose 38 caliber bullet was lying on the bed. Also on the bed was a Bereta 380 caliber handgun. There was also a 25-caliber Bereta was located in his dresser drawer. The guns were confiscated and taken to the (Butler County Sheriff’s Office) Property room for safe keeping.”

Deputies also found two small pill bottles, each with a small amount of marijuana.

“The marijuana will be destroyed,” the report states.
