Sheriff: 2 charged with endangerment after child ingests THC gummy
BOONE COUNTY, Ky. (WXIX) - A brother and a sister are charged with wanton endangerment and endangering the welfare of a minor after admitting that a child in their home ingested a THC gummy, according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a home around 9:15 a.m. on April 29 for reports of an unconscious four-year-old girl, the sheriff’s office spokesperson Maj. Philip Ridgell said in a release.
The child ate the gummy the night before at 60-year-old Darlene Schloss’ home on Bruce Drive, Maj. Ridgell explained.
The next day, April 29, the sheriff’s office said Schloss brought the 4-year-old to her daughter’s home, where she was going to babysit her grandkids.
According to deputies, Schloss became concerned when the child wouldn’t wake up and said she called her daughter (the child’s aunt) and admitted to her that the child ate a gummy.
The victim’s aunt then called the 4-year-old’s parents, who immediately called 911 to report the medical emergency, Maj. Ridgell said.
When deputies arrived at the home, they found the child was breathing but was unconscious and had a gray complexion, the sheriff’s office reported.
According to Maj. Ridgell, emergency responders transported the child to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, where she remained for two days before being released Wednesday.
Deputies at the scene said that Schloss and her brother, Stephen Troxell, 63, were home on Bruce Drive when the incident happened, but neither called the police to report it.
The sheriff’s office reported that Troxell bought the THC gummy from a local store and left it unsecured in a room shared with the child.
According to deputies who spoke to Schloss, she told them she didn’t report that her granddaughter ingested a THC gummy because Troxell said if she notified authorities, they would “take her away.”
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the store that sold the gummy due to possible product packaging and labeling violations.
Schloss and Troxell are at the Boone County Detention Center with a bond set at $100,000.
