Man impersonates officer, handcuffs teen at Hamilton bus stop: Police
HAMILTON, Ohio (WXIX) - A man is facing abduction and impersonating an officer charges after police records claim he handcuffed a 14-year-old male and tried to get the teen in his car.
On Sept. 25, 36-year-old Bradley Pyles approached a 14-year-old at a bus stop on Gateway Avenue, the Hamilton Police Department wrote in their report.
The police report says that Pyles approached the teen in a 2006 silver Chevy, and put him in handcuffs.
A bus driver witnessing the interaction asked Pyles for his name and badge number.
Pyles allegedly stated that he was a security guard in Hamilton, flashed a gold badge, and gave a badge number of #38, according to police.
Pyles also told the bus driver his name was Bradley Smith and that he would take the teen to school, according to the victim’s neighbor, Aarika, who witnessed the encounter.
“He was terrified,” Aarika described. ”He was telling me that he thought it was a fake cop trying to kidnap him and he didn’t know what to do.”
After the confrontation with the bus driver, police say that Pyles removed the handcuffs from the 14-year-old and went with Aarika.
The entire incident was caught on the bus' camera as well as bystanders' video recordings.
On Oct. 25, Fairfield City School District sent the following message to parents and guardians about the incident:
The staff at Fairfield Freshman School spoke with the victim and his parent early Friday morning and referred the parent to the Hamilton Police Department once it was determined that the location of the bus stop was in their jurisdiction.
Fairfield City Schools says they worked closely with police during the investigation. The district does not have any further comment.
Pyles is currently in custody and now faces two felony charges of impersonation of a peace officer and abduction.
His bond was set at $3,500 with his next court date scheduled for Nov. 4.
