MOUNT HEALTHY, Ohio (WXIX) - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after bringing a loaded firearm to Mount Healthy Junior/Senior High School on Halloween.

According to Mount Healthy police, the teen was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and conveyance of a weapon on school grounds.

In a message to families, Mt. Healthy City Schools explained that a “standard procedure” was followed after staff saw what looked like two students passing a vaping device to each other.

“Following our standard procedure, both students were taken to a secure office, where their bags were searched by trained security personnel,” the district told families.

It was during that search the loaded gun was found in one of the student’s backpack, according to Mt. Healthy City Schools.

FOX19 NOW spoke with one parent who has kids that attend Mount Healthy Schools, but wanted to stay anonymous.

“I’m not going to lie, my kids’ attendance is so bad because there’s been times like this where I don’t even want to send them to school tomorrow,” the mother said. “They casually have them [guns] in there all the time.”

She says it’s something her children fear regularly.

“They don’t know what’s going to happen. They watch the news. They see schools shot up - kids killed. That makes them feel nervous,” she explained.

The mother says she feels that Mount Healthy needs to implement better protocols to prevent a student from getting that far with a weapon.

“If Mount Healthy can’t get metal detectors in the schools to protect the kids, they need to close that school down. They don’t have enough security for that big school.”

School officials say Mount Healthy police were called immediately and that the backpack search was conducted by trained security personnel. They say this student did not use or show the weapon.

Police say the teen was taken into custody at the Hamilton County Detention Center.
