COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WXIX) - A 15-year-old was arrested Friday after an incident happened on the campus of Northwest High School Wednesday during dismissal, according to Colerain Township police.

Officers say the suspect is facing charges of aggravated menacing, receiving stolen property, carrying concealed weapons, illegal conveyance or possession of deadly weapon or dangerous ordinance or of object indistinguishable from firearm in school safety zone.

On Thursday, around 2:45 p.m., officers assigned to Northwest High School were called to Stout Road for a disturbance during school dismissal.

During an investigation, officers say they discovered that two male suspects approached a Northwest High School student in an attempt to engage in a fight.

One of the suspects, the 15-year-old, brandished a firearm, which was later located in a nearby neighborhood outside of the school’s campus, police said.

Officers say both of the suspects had fled once officers arrived at the scene.

The investigation into the second suspect is still active, police said.

The students at the school did not attend classes the following Thursday.

A letter was sent out to families explaining the situation.

The high school was placed on a full lockdown at 2:45 p.m., alongside nearby Northwest Local Schools.

Northwest High School began releasing students at 3:24 p.m. to be reunited with their families through a “controlled release,” the district said. The lockdown was lifted once all students were with their parents/guardians.

On Wednesday evening, a second letter was sent out to Northwest High School families stating that the administration decided to cancel classes for students on Thursday, Oct. 31 “to adequately prepare” for their return on Friday.

It is still unclear what exactly happened at the high school, but Colerain Township police believe the incident was isolated. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Colerian Police Department at 513-321-COPS.

For students in need of support, the counseling office will be open between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., Principal Shrewsberry added.
