On Thursday morning, deputies were dispatched around 5:45 a.m. to the area of US-50 near Campo Verde Drive and Gilday Drive in Dillsboro for a report of gunshots.

A caller told dispatchers they saw a blue SUV with a person inside heading east on the highway, the sheriff’s office said.

A sergeant spotted a blue SUV minutes later, stopped it on Hueseman Road and had a “brief interaction” with the driver, now known as Wellman, who then took off, deputies explained.

Officers heading to the scene lost sight of the vehicle, but later found it crashed into an embankment unoccupied at 6:06 a.m.

About an hour later, the sheriff’s office announced that a man was found shot to death, and a manhunt ensued.

Hours later, Wellman was found in a creek near Hueseman and Laughery Creek roads, and was taken into custody just before 11:15 a.m.

As of now, there is no court date set, nor formal court documents filed within the court system.
