Fetus found in trash at Louisville high school was result of miscarriage

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Louisville Metro Police are investigating after a small fetus was found in a trash can in a bathroom at Iroquois High School on March 29.

According to Joey Riddle, the Iroquois High principal, a custodian found the fetus in the trash while cleaning a woman's bathroom around 8 a.m.

The Jefferson County Coroner's office has confirmed that the fetus was male, and appeared to be less than 20 weeks and died as a result of a miscarriage.

Riddle says he believes the fetus was placed in the trash sometime the morning of March 29 since there were no events at the school over the weekend. However, he was not sure whether the fetus was from a student or someone else.

"I'm sending home a letter to the parents of our students encouraging them to speak to their sons and daughters," Riddle said. "Teenage pregnancy can be very confusing and we need to make sure we maintain open lines of communication to help our students be safe and healthy."

Police and school officials say they don't know who the mother is.  They hope she will come forward because she may need some medical attention.

Parents waiting for their children after school told us they were shocked about the incident and are calling it a tragedy.
