Local gymnast wins three gold medals at Special Olympics World Games

ERLANGER, KY (FOX19) - Erlanger rhythmic gymnast Danielle Blakeney won five medals on Saturday at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece.

One of those medals was the all-around gold, with a score of 27.661, beating the silver medalist by 1.168 points.

Blakeney also won gold in the ribbon and ball events, silver in the rope event, and bronze in the club event.

Kentucky's five athletes have now won 18 medals at this year's games, including seven gold medals.

The other four athletes are:

  • Ryan Barts of Georgetown (4x100-meter relay team)
  • Josh Alexander of Union (Bowling)
  • Lee Dockins of Russellville (Gymnastics)
  • Collin Lutz of Nicholasville (Swimming)

Competition at the Games ends tomorrow, with a closing ceremony on July 4.

The 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games include more than 7,500 athletes from more than 185 countries competing in 22 Olympic-style sports.
