There's a new development in the Ryan Widmer case.

Judge Robin Piper has recused himself from ruling on Widmer's murder conviction appeal that will be argued next week.

Piper was assigned to hear the case in the 12th district court of appeals but after reading the briefs, he decided to step aside.

Piper is a former Butler County Prosecutor.

Judges Robert Ringland, Robert Hendrickson and former Judge H.J. Bressler will now hear the oral argument Monday.

Widmer was convicted in his first trial, but that was overturned due to juror misconduct.

His second trial ended in a hung jury. The third trial ended with a guilty verdict and he was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.

Defense attorneys have filed an appeal for a fourth trial, stating that errors were made that violated his constitutional rights.
