King's Hearse

Martin Luther King's hearse for sale on eBay

The hearse that carried the body of Martin Luther King Junior is up for sale on eBay. A St. Louis lawyer says he's selling the 1966 Cadillac Fleetwood on behalf of its owner, a former car dealer. Efforts to generate interest among museums and foundations have gone nowhere. The middleman says bids on the online auction site have not met the minimum sale price, which he declined to disclose. As of yesterday, there had been 16 bids for the hearse, with the highest at more than 15-thousand dollars. A spokeswoman for the National Civil Rights Museum says she finds the sale troubling.

She says she'd rather see people use such artifacts for educational purposes. She says the museum didn't want to buy the hearse, in part because of a lack of space.
